Translations

Every word HallPro shows, in every language, can be changed by the hall on Translations (under Settings): the admin screens, the help, the committee app, the hirers’ app, the booking pages and the emails. On every plan you can change HallPro’s English wording. The Standard plan adds language packs for French, German, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian (they come in the HallPro Pro plugin), and lets you add a language of your own. The translations were made by the HallPro team and have not yet been checked by native speakers, so if anything reads wrongly, correct it yourself: it takes effect everywhere straight away.

On screen. Choose the language, find the words (in English or in the language), and type your own wording in the box beside the English. Save before moving to the next page. Filter by part of HallPro (admin screens, help, apps and booking pages, emails and messages, Standard and Premium features), or show only what you have changed. Your changes are marked, with HallPro’s own wording underneath; tick Put back to return to it.

Placeholders. Wording such as “Invoice %s is due on %2$s” has gaps HallPro fills with a number, a name, a date or an amount. Keep every %s, %d or %1$s exactly as it is, though you may move it within the sentence. A change that drops or alters one is not saved, because it would break the screen that uses it.

Export and import. Download a language as a .po file (for Poedit or any translation tool, or a professional translator) or as a spreadsheet (.csv, for Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets): everything, or only your changes. Correct it, then import it back. Wherever the file differs from HallPro’s own wording it becomes one of your changes. Choose whether to keep your earlier changes or start again from the file.

A new language. Add one by its name and code (pl_PL for Polish, cy for Welsh, as WordPress writes them). It starts in English; translate it on screen or import a translator’s file, then choose it on Country & language.

Your wording is kept apart from HallPro’s, so updates never undo it. Support is provided from the UK, in English only.

For example: A hall in Lyon finds that the French screens say “locataire” where the committee always says “loueur”. The secretary exports French as a spreadsheet, corrects the Translation column in Excel over a cup of coffee, and imports it back. Every screen, the hirers’ app and the emails use “loueur” from then on, and next year’s HallPro update keeps it.

Questions people ask

Where does my change show?
Everywhere that wording is used, in that language: the admin screens, the help, both apps, the booking and public pages, and the emails. An app already open on a phone picks it up the next time it is opened.

Will an update undo my corrections?
No. Your wording is kept separately and used in place of HallPro’s. If an update rewrites the English of a sentence you corrected, that one sentence goes back to HallPro’s new wording, so look over it after an update.

It will not save one of my changes.
It has lost or altered a placeholder: a %s, %d or %1$s. Copy them exactly from the English. A percent sign on its own, as in 25%, cannot be used in wording that has placeholders; write it as 25 per cent or %% instead.

Which file should I use, .po or spreadsheet?
A spreadsheet is easiest for a committee member: change only the Translation columns and save it as CSV. A professional translator will prefer the .po file. Both import the same way.

Can I change the English too?
Yes. Choose English and change it like any other language, for instance “hirer” to “customer” if that is what your hall says.

How do I undo everything?
At the bottom of Translations, Put back all your changes returns a language to HallPro’s own wording. Export your changes first if you may want them again. A language you added can be removed there too.

Why do I only see English?
The other languages are language packs on the Standard plan, and they come in the HallPro Pro plugin. On the Basic plan HallPro is in English, and you can still change any of its English wording here. With Standard, install and activate HallPro Pro from the Licensing screen and the languages appear.

Who can change the wording?
Anyone who can change HallPro’s settings.
