Languages and changing the wording

Support for Pet Central is provided from the UK, in English only. The translations are there so that your screens, your staff app and everything your customers see can be in your language.

Pet Central comes in English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian. Settings → Language chooses which one it uses. Leave it on The same language as WordPress and it follows WordPress: the site language for your customers, and each person’s own profile language on the admin screens.

The choice covers Pet Central only: your admin screens, the staff app, the customer portal, booking pages, invoices and emails. The rest of WordPress keeps its own language.

Changing a word

Every string Pet Central shows is listed under Change the wording, with the translation that came with it. Type your own in the right-hand box and save. It works in English too, if you would rather say “Pamper” than “Full groom” everywhere.

Your wording is kept on your own site, not in the plugin’s files, so an update never overwrites it. When an update adds new strings they show as Not translated yet until the next update translates them, or you type your own.

Using a translator or Poedit

Press Download as a .po file to get the whole language with your changes in it. Edit it in Poedit or send it to a translator, then upload it. Only the strings that differ from the shipped translation are kept as your changes.

What it does not change

Things you have typed yourself, such as your service names, email templates and invoice wording, stay as you wrote them. Change those where you made them.

1 Choose the language Settings → Language → Pet Central speaks, then Save language.
2 Find a word to change Search for it, or show only What customers see.
3 Type your version and save Leave a box empty to go back to the shipped wording.

FAQ

Can I contact support in my own language?
No. Support is provided from the UK, in English only. You are welcome to write to us using a translation tool.

Who translated Pet Central?
The Pet Central team prepared the translations. If something reads oddly for your trade, change it here — and tell us in English, so the next update can carry the better wording.

Do my changes survive an update?
Yes. They are stored on your site, not in the plugin. If an update rewords a string, your change for the old wording is listed as no longer used, and can be tidied away.

Will my customers see the language I choose?
Yes: the portal, booking pages, the customer app and the emails Pet Central sends all use it.

I changed the email wording in Settings before. Will it still be translated?
Wording you left as it came is treated as the default, so it follows the language you choose. Wording you changed yourself stays exactly as you wrote it, in whatever language you wrote it.

Can a translator work on it outside Pet Central?
Yes. Use Download as a .po file, edit it in a program such as Poedit or send it to a translator, then upload it on the same screen. Only the lines that differ from the shipped wording are kept as your changes.

My trial started in my language. Can I change it?
Yes. A 14-day trial starts in the language you signed up in, and you can change it any time here. If you stay on the free Basic plan after the trial, Pet Central switches to English; the Standard plan and above keep your language.

Why is some text still in English?
A few things are not translated: the list of changes in each update, the sample data a demo adds, and anything you typed yourself, such as service names and your own messages. If you find a Pet Central word still in English, type your own version here and tell us, in English, so the next update can include it.
