Foyer screen

A “Today at the hall” page for a TV or tablet in the entrance, set up on Foyer screen (under Apps). Each room shows what is on now and until when, what is next, and the rest of the day. Below: the hall’s own events coming up, and a line of your own — the wifi name, “Please take your rubbish home”.

Nothing private. A booking is shown by name only when the hirer is listed on What’s on, and then with the name they chose. Everything else is “Private booking”. No contact details, door codes or money are ever on it.

Switch it on and open its address on the screen’s browser, full-screen (scan the QR code with your phone to send it there). It refreshes every two minutes and keeps the clock right between. The address has a key in it so it is not a page anybody can find; give it a new address if the old one gets about.

1 Switch it on On Foyer screen (under Apps & screens), tick The foyer screen is on and press Save.

2 Arrange it Drag the blocks into order, choose their widths, the lettering, the text size and a news ticker if you want one. The preview shows the TV as you go.

3 Send the address to the screen Scan the QR code with your phone to send the address to the TV or tablet, or type it into the screen's browser.

4 Make it full-screen Put the browser into full-screen or kiosk mode and leave it. It refreshes itself every two minutes.

For example: At 7.15pm on a Tuesday the screen by the door says: Main Hall, Now: Tuesday Yoga until 8.30pm; Next: Parish Council 8.45pm. Small Room: Private booking until 9pm. Coming up: Christmas Quiz, Fri 12 Dec.

Questions people ask

Can we change what is on the screen and where?
Yes, under Layout on the Foyer screen page. Drag the blocks into order, or use the arrows. Choose each block’s width: full, two thirds, half or a third. Blocks that fit share a row. Untick any you do not want. As well as the rooms, events and your message there are Regular groups this week (from What’s on) and a Book the hall QR code. The preview beside the list shows the TV as you go, with today’s real bookings. Press Save to send it to the screen, which picks it up within two minutes.

Can we change the lettering?
Yes. Under Settings on the Foyer screen page, choose the Lettering and the Text size. The fonts include ones every screen already has (Arial, Verdana, Georgia) and some from Google Fonts, such as Atkinson Hyperlegible, which is designed to be easy to read. The text size goes from 80% to 150% and changes everything on the screen together, news ticker included. The preview shows each change straight away.

Can it show the news?
Yes. Choose a News ticker on the Foyer screen page: BBC News (top stories, UK, England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland), BBC Sport, Sky News, or the address of another feed such as a local paper’s. Headlines scroll along the bottom with the source named on the bar. Only headlines are shown, never the stories, and they are fetched at most every quarter of an hour. If the feed is down, the last headlines stay up for up to a day.

What equipment do we need?
Any screen with a web browser: a smart TV, an old tablet, or a TV with a small stick computer plugged in. It needs the hall’s wifi.
