📱 Sign-In Kiosk

The Sign-In Kiosk is a tablet sign-in screen for the door. Members and visitors sign themselves in, the time is logged automatically, and you get a record of who is on the green.

Setting it up

• Create a page and add the shortcode [pvl_signin_kiosk], then open that page on a tablet — or just open Bookings → Check-in Tablet.
• The tablet must be signed in to a club account once; members then simply tap their name (they do not each log in).

How members and visitors sign in

• Member — taps “I’m a Member”, types their surname and picks their name. Their membership type and number are filled in automatically from their record. They can add a reason, say whether they are coming to bowl (Yes/No), and sign on the signature pad, then tap Sign in.
• Visitor — taps “I’m a Visitor”, types their name and the name of the member bringing them, chooses whether they are coming to bowl, and signs, then taps Sign in.
• Expected today — anyone with a rink booking or an invited guest for today appears for a single-tap sign-in; a green tick shows who is already in. Signing in from a rink booking this way is automatically marked as coming to bowl.

Attendance list

Under the sign-in buttons, an Attendance today table shows everyone who has signed in — name, membership type and number (for members), the member a guest is with, whether they came to bowl, time in, time out, and whether they signed. Anyone still in has a Sign out button in the list, and the table refreshes automatically after each sign-in or sign-out.

A member can only have one open sign-in at a time. If they are already signed in and pick their name to sign in again, the kiosk immediately shows a pop-up with the time they signed in; when they sign out from it, they carry straight on into the details screen for their new sign-in.

To catch anyone who forgets to sign out, you can set an Auto sign-out time under Settings → System → Devices. Each day at that time (for example 3am) everyone still signed in is signed out automatically, with their sign-out recorded as the end of the day they signed in.

Locking the tablet

Tap 🔒 Lock screen to go full-screen so the sign-in page stays up and cannot be closed by accident. To exit, tap the small ✕ and confirm — or enter the Lock PIN if you have set one (Settings → System → Devices).

Printing a pass

In Settings → System → Devices, turn on Auto-print pass to print a name pass after sign-in. Choose who passes print for — Guests only (the default) or Everyone — and the pass size to match your labels (62mm label roll, A7, A6, or A4 for testing). Because browsers can’t silently choose a printer, set your chosen printer as the tablet’s default printer so passes print straight to it; the printer name field is just for your reference.

Common questions

Can I print passes for visitors only?

Yes — in Settings → System → Devices set “Print passes for” to “Guests only” (the default). Choose “Everyone” to also print a pass for members.

How do I choose which printer is used?

Set the printer you want as the tablet’s default printer. Browsers can’t pick a printer automatically for security reasons, so passes go to the tablet’s default. The printer-name box is just a label for your own reference.

Do members need their own login for the kiosk?

No. The tablet is signed in once to a club/steward account, and everyone taps their own name. Members never enter a password.

Can a visitor sign in without a host member?

Yes — visitors just type their name. If they are a guest of a member they can add that as the reason.

How do I stop people closing the kiosk?

That has to be done on the tablet, not in Pavilion. Swiping up to leave an app is a gesture the iPad itself handles — no website can block it, and any that claimed to would be telling you stories. Pavilion’s Lock screen stops somebody wandering off into the rest of your website from inside the kiosk; it cannot stop them leaving the browser altogether.

What does stop it is Guided Access, built into every iPad:

1. Settings → Accessibility → Guided Access — turn it on.
2. Tap Passcode Settings and set a passcode — one the committee knows and a member does not.
3. Open the kiosk from its home-screen icon, then triple-click the side button and tap Start.

The iPad is now held on the kiosk. Swiping up, the home button and the app switcher all do nothing, and getting out takes the passcode and another triple-click. Android has the same thing under Screen Pinning.

Worth doing at the same time: Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock → Never, and leave the tablet on charge. A kiosk that has gone to sleep is a kiosk nobody signs in on.

So what is the Lock screen button for?

Keeping somebody inside the kiosk rather than inside the tablet. Without it a member can tap through to the rest of your site — the admin, another member’s details, the till. With it, leaving the kiosk needs the staff PIN. Guided Access and the Lock screen do two different jobs, and a tablet by the door wants both.

Where can I see who has signed in?

Sign-ins are recorded with a timestamp, and member sign-ins also feed the normal check-in/attendance records. For a printable list over any date range, go to Reports → Attendance → Visitors & Sign-ins, choose the dates (and whether to show visitors, members or everyone), then use the Print button. The list shows each person’s name, membership type and number, the member a guest is with, whether they came to bowl, times in and out, the reason, and their signature.

Can I see how it looks on a tablet without one?

Yes — on the Check-in Tablet page click “Preview as tablet” to view the live sign-in screen inside a tablet frame, in portrait or landscape.

How do people sign out?

Everyone who is currently signed in appears in a “Signed in now” list under the sign-in buttons on the kiosk. To leave, they tap their own name, confirm on the next screen, and they are signed out with the time recorded. The list updates automatically.

The pass shows a print box — can it just print straight away?

That print box is controlled by the tablet’s browser, not the plugin, so it can’t be removed from a web page for security reasons. To skip it, run the tablet in “kiosk printing” mode: on Android/Windows open Chrome with the –kiosk-printing switch; on iPad use a kiosk browser app that supports background printing. Set your pass printer as the tablet’s default and passes then print immediately. Full steps are in Settings → System → Devices.

What account should the tablet be signed in to?

One that can manage bookings or use the till — a steward or club account. The kiosk writes the club’s attendance register, so it is deliberately not something any member’s login can drive.

The kiosk stopped signing people in. What happened?

A page left open for days eventually needs refreshing for security reasons. It now spots this and reloads itself, but if a screen ever stops responding, pulling down to refresh or reloading the page puts it right.

Somebody is still shown as signed in from last week.

Anybody left signed in is closed off automatically at the club’s closing time — 11pm unless you change it under Settings → System → Devices — and the register notes that it was done automatically rather than pretending somebody watched them leave.

Somebody tapped Sign in twice. Are they counted twice?

No. A member or visitor who is already signed in is asked to sign out first, and the attendance register keeps one entry per person per day however many times they scan, tap or are checked in by hand — so the figures you would show for rates relief are a list of people, not of button presses.
