🎯 Scenario: Reclaim disk space safely
Run a full scan, open the Unlinked Media Files list, confirm the files are genuinely unused, then move them to the Recycle Bin (with backup on) — nothing is deleted until the retention period expires, so you can restore anytime.
Media Library Manager → Dashboard → 🔍 Run Full Scan
These are files no post, page or setting references
Biggest wins for the least effort
Check the usage count; some references (sliders, CSS) can be missed
Media Manager → Settings & Stats → Cloud, so a copy is kept before deletion
Reversible — files are not gone yet
Restore anytime before then from the Recycle Bin
💡 If you are unsure about a file, move it to the Recycle Bin rather than deleting — you keep the space benefit during the retention window but can still restore it.
Questions people ask
How do I know a file is genuinely unused?
Media Library Manager checks post content, featured images, and common meta. Very custom references (some page-builder or slider setups) can be missed, so review the usage count and, for important files, search your site before deleting.
Will moving files to the Recycle Bin free space immediately?
Recycle Bin files remain on disk until the retention period expires (or you empty the bin). Space is fully reclaimed on permanent deletion.
What is the safest order to do this in?
Scan → review → enable backup → move to Recycle Bin. Only use permanent delete once you are confident, or let the retention period handle it automatically.
