🪄 Image Compressor

The Image Compressor re-encodes an image at a lower quality setting to shrink its file size without changing its dimensions. Use the quality slider (lower = smaller file, higher = better fidelity) and optionally convert the image to WebP, a modern format that is typically 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality.

As with the resizer, the original file is backed up to uploads/modulefest-media-library-manager/originals/ first, so you can restore it if you go too far.

Questions people ask

What quality should I choose?
A quality of 80–85 is a good balance for photos — noticeably smaller with little visible loss. Below 60 you may start to see artefacts on detailed images.

What does “convert to WebP” do?
It saves the image in the WebP format, which usually produces a smaller file than JPEG or PNG at the same quality. The attachment is repointed to the new .webp file. This only runs if your server supports WebP encoding.

Why did compression save little or nothing?
The image was probably already optimised. Re-compressing an already-compressed image at a similar quality yields little gain — the tool will tell you when there was nothing to save.

How is this different from the Compression Advisor?
The Advisor only finds large images; it doesn’t change them. The Compressor actually performs the compression on an image you choose.
