🗜️ Compression Advisor

The Compression Advisor lists images above a configurable size threshold, sorted largest first. It helps you identify oversized images that could be compressed or converted to a more efficient format (WebP or AVIF) to improve page speed scores.

To shrink the images it finds, use the Image Resizer or Image Compressor on the Tools page; both keep a copy of the original that you can restore.

Sizes are measured on the original upload. For photos wider or taller than 2560px, WordPress also makes a smaller “scaled” copy that it shows on the site; the list notes that copy’s size too, but the original is what takes up the space.

The size threshold (default 500 KB) is set on the tool card. You can also set a separate threshold for the Oversized Images dashboard widget via its ⚙️ cog.

Questions people ask

What size threshold should I use?
For web use, images over 300 KB are worth reviewing. Hero images can reasonably be up to 500 KB, but most content images should be well under 200 KB.

Which format should I convert to?
WebP has near-universal browser support and typically achieves 25–35% smaller file sizes than JPEG at equivalent quality. AVIF is better still but has slightly less browser support.

Which plugins can compress or convert my images?
Popular options include Imagify, ShortPixel, Smush, and EWWW Image Optimizer. EWWW can bulk-convert to WebP server-side.
