Connecting your domain: questions and problems

Where do I change my DNS? At the company you pay for the domain each year, or at Cloudflare if you’ve moved your DNS there. Not sure who that is? Look the domain up on lookup.icann.org: the Registrar line names the company, and Name servers shows where the DNS is managed.

It won’t let me add a CNAME for @. That’s normal: the domain itself (@) must use the A record with 16.60.17.110. Only www uses the CNAME.

My domain company asks for a “TTL”. Leave the default, or choose 1 hour.

How do I know the records are right? Enter your domain at dnschecker.org. For type A it should show 16.60.17.110 almost everywhere; for www.yourbusiness.co.uk with type CNAME it should show yourname.modulefest.uk. Ticks appearing in some places and not others just means the change is still spreading.

The wizard says a record isn’t right. It tells you what it found: another address, a leftover AAAA record, or Cloudflare’s proxy (orange cloud). Fix that one, wait a few minutes, and press Check my records again.

My browser says the site isn’t secure. The certificate is set up as part of the switch. Until we’ve emailed to say it’s done, keep using your modulefest.uk address.

Can I use a domain only for some pages, or a different part of my site? No. The whole website moves to the domain. A subdomain such as book.yourbusiness.co.uk also works: ask us, and point it with a CNAME to yourname.modulefest.uk.

Does it cost extra? No. Connecting your own domain is included in your hosting. You keep paying your domain company for the domain itself.

I’d rather not change anything. You don’t have to. Your website works at yourname.modulefest.uk, and most domain companies can simply forward (redirect) your domain to it, with no DNS changes on our side.
