Pet, client and the coat

An animal belongs to one household, so on a booking the Pet and the Client are really one fact asked twice. The two fields now keep each other honest.

What happens

Choose the pet and the client fills itself in from that pet’s record. Choose a client and the pet list narrows to that client’s own animals — if they have one, it is filled in; if they have several, you pick from their own, and the booking will not save until you do. Clear the client and the full list comes back.

Why it matters more than it looks

A booking whose client is not the pet’s owner invoices the wrong person, and nobody finds out until they ring up about it.

The coat

Once the pet is chosen, a line under Price says what that animal’s coat adds — the surcharge and the longer appointment from the Coat & clip library. It is applied when you save, so you see the sum before it happens rather than after.

1
Pick either onePet or client, whichever you have to hand. The other follows.
2
Several animals? Pick the oneThe list is already down to their animals. The booking will not save until you choose one of them.
3
Read the coat lineUnder Price, if that animal has a coat recorded that changes the sum.
4
Check the record if it looks wrongThe owner comes from the pet’s own record — fix it there and every future booking follows.

Example

A groomer takes a booking over the phone, types the dog’s name, and the owner and the coat surcharge both appear without being asked for — and the wool-coat groom is quoted at what it actually takes rather than at the base price.

FAQ

Can I delete a pet?
Only one nothing is attached to. The animal’s own record carries a Delete panel on the right: if the record is clean — no bookings, no class places, no waiting-list places and no before-and-after photos — it offers to remove it for good. If anything is attached the panel says what, and lists the bookings so you can see what this record actually is. Anyone who can edit pets can do it; you do not have to be an administrator.

Can the customer delete a pet themselves?
Yes, under the same rule as your side. On their Pets page, inside a pet’s Care details panel, there is a Remove section. If nothing is attached to that animal it offers to remove it, asks to be sure, and only the second press does anything. If the animal has a history with you the section says so in their words — “this one has a history with us, so it stays on your account” — and invites them to tell you if it is a duplicate. They can only ever touch their own animals, and the check that decides is the same one your Delete panel uses, so the two cannot drift apart.

A customer has ended up with several copies of the same pet.
They can clear the spares up themselves from the app — open the duplicate, open Care details, and use Remove at the foot of the panel. Only the copies with nothing booked or recorded against them will offer it, which is usually exactly the spares. The one with the history is the one to keep. You can do the same from the animal’s record in the admin.

What happens when I press Delete?
You are asked first, on the page. Pressing Delete this pet… removes nothing — it turns the panel into a confirmation naming the animal, saying that the record and everything on it goes and that there is nothing in the Bin afterwards, with a warning at the top of the screen as well. Only Yes, delete <name> on that confirmation actually removes it, and Cancel leaves everything as it was. From 2.617.0 this is a step on the page rather than a browser pop-up: a pop-up is one keystroke to dismiss and does not appear at all if scripting is blocked, and something permanent should not rest on a box that might not open. If somebody books the animal in between your two presses, the confirmation is withdrawn and the panel tells you why.

Why can’t I delete this pet? It looks empty.
Something is pointing at it, and the Delete panel names what. The one that catches people out is a group walk: a dog can have been out forty times without a single booking being “its” booking, because a group walk stores the whole list of dogs together. Photographs count too — they are the record of work you did. Delete or reassign whatever is holding it and the button appears.

The Bin link has gone from a pet in the Pets list.
That is the same rule. Binning a pet with bookings behind it would take it out of your lists while every one of those bookings carried on pointing at it, so the option is withdrawn rather than left there to cause it. A pet with nothing attached still bins and deletes normally.

I deleted the wrong pet — can I get it back?
No. Deleting is permanent and there is nothing in the Bin afterwards, which is why it is only offered on a record with nothing attached and why it takes two presses with the animal named on the confirmation. A pet you might want back is one with history, and that one cannot be deleted at all. If you simply want it out of the way, edit it rather than removing it.

The client filled in is wrong.
It came from that pet’s record. Open the pet, correct the owner under Owner, and every booking made afterwards follows the corrected one. Changing it on this booking alone would leave the pet record still wrong.

I want a booking with no pet on it.
Leave the client blank too and nothing is compulsory. The pet is only insisted on once a client with at least one animal is chosen, because a client on a booking is what gets invoiced.

A dog I expected is not in the list any more.
The list is showing the chosen client’s animals only. Either it belongs to somebody else — check the owner on its pet record — or the client is wrong. Clearing the client brings the whole list back.

A customer saw the word “Array” after saving their pet’s details.
Fixed in 2.499.0. Three things on the customer’s Pets screen — saving vet and emergency-contact details, giving off-lead permission, and withdrawing it — answered in a form the screen did not understand, so instead of the confirmation the customer got the word Array. It was cosmetic in that nothing was lost: every one of those had actually saved. But being answered with “Array” after signing an off-lead permission is not a message anyone should get, and it was writing a warning into the site’s error log each time. Errors on that screen now also look like errors, in red, rather than sharing the same reassuring colour as a success.

The client has no pets at all.
The list will be empty and it says so. Nothing is made compulsory in that case, so the booking still saves — but add the animal to that client’s record, because a booking with no pet has nothing to bill for.

Does this apply to group walks?
No. A group booking carries dogs from several households, so there is no single owner to fill in — the owners are listed for you instead, and each is invoiced for their own dog.

Nothing fills in at all.
The pets have no owner recorded. Open a pet record and set the owner; the booking form reads that and nothing else.
