Muzzle conditioning

A muzzle put on a dog that has not been taught to accept it is a welfare problem and a training setback — the dog panics and associates the muzzle with restraint.

Done properly the dog asks for it

Eight stages, weeks of short sessions, and the dog ends up pushing its own face into the basket.

The usual failure

An owner with a deadline — a vet visit, legislation, a neighbour — going from stage two to stage seven over a weekend. Stages with dates make that visible, and the screen says so.

Basket muzzles only

It must allow full panting and drinking. A fabric muzzle holds the mouth shut and is for a two-minute vet examination and nothing else; a dog cannot cool itself in one.
