Renting a table: the working arrangement

On the Team page each person can be marked as somebody who rents a table from you or who works for you. Left alone, Pet Central works it out from whether they have a letting or rental terms — a fair guess, and the wrong thing to be certain about, which is why you can say outright and be believed.

What saying it changes

Their share of a job is worked out from the rental terms rather than kept separately, so the two screens cannot disagree. And their weekly hours stop being shown as a rota: somebody renting a table decides their own hours, so the grid is labelled as what they have told you, with the days their letting actually covers shown beside it. Where the two disagree — the diary offering them on a day they have no table, or a table let on a day the diary keeps shut — the screen says so and leaves it to you, because which one is right depends on what you agreed.

The licence

A reference, the dates, the notice period, and whether they carry their own insurance, bring their own equipment and set their own prices. It is somewhere to keep what you agreed so it can be found without going through a drawer.

What this is not

It does not decide anybody’s employment status, and a completed form is not a determination. That is settled by how the relationship actually works day to day, not by what any software records. If there is any doubt it is worth an accountant or an employment solicitor; HMRC’s Check Employment Status for Tax tool is the usual starting point.

Example

A groomer rents the window table two days a week, brings her own scissors and sets her own prices. Marked as renting, her Team card stops reading like a rota, her 60% is worked out from the 40% you take, and the licence reference sits with her record.

FAQ

Does filling this in make somebody self-employed?
No. Nothing here changes what somebody is; it records what you say the arrangement is and stops the screen describing it wrongly. Status comes from how the work actually happens.

Can I say somebody works for me even though they pay me a percentage?
Yes, and that is rather the point — the guess is only a guess. What you record wins, and their percentage goes back to being their own commission rate.

Why is their hours grid still there?
Because the diary needs to know when to offer them. What changed is what it is called: a note of what they told you, not hours you set.

It says the diary and the letting disagree.
One says they are bookable on a day the other does not cover. Neither is wrong on its face, so nothing is changed for you — adjust whichever matches what you agreed.
